Your project

Build & installation of your home improvement project

Planning a home improvement

Although conservatories and other small to medium size extensions don’t require planning permission, larger additions to a property will, along with any changes to listed buildings or those in conservation areas. All home extensions need to abide by building regulations – make sure you choose reputable builders for a safe and legal build.

Think about how to make the most of available space without impeding on the garden. Consider whether you will need to reconfigure your home’s layout – adding or joining rooms to create a space that flows. Check out our ideas page for inspiration, or visit our showroom for free, expert advice.

Specifying products and materials

Understanding the technicalities of a building project can be complex and should not have to be something for the customer to worry about. You might have some preferences, or even ideas of how you want your home improvement to look. A good building company will be ‘product neutral ‘ – able to advise you on the best products for your unique design.

Building schedule

A large home improvement such as a conservatory or orangery can cause upheaval, especially if the build involves knocking through external walls to create open-plan living. That’s why you will want to make sure that the building works are as quick and efficient as possible, not hit by setbacks and delays. Look for a company who can plan the works around you and your schedule, and have a reputation for honesty and efficiency.

If you paid £50,000 for an extension and ended up with a brick shell, you’d be bitterly disappointed. A full build and installation of a conservatory, orangery or home extension should be comprehensive, down to the electrics, lighting, plug sockets and switches, and plumbing. Just as important is the finishing – skirting boards, plastered walls and tiled floors.

Check that you’ve agreed this level of detail with your builder or installer, and make sure these services are written into the contract.
